Wednesday Night Squash League

Thunder Bay welcomes its first weekly squash to Thunder Bay in the fall of 2010. This league will run out of the Canada Games Complex and be limited to the first 20 players, initially. Why do we need another league? A weekly league adds a social aspect to our game. It provides an avenue for players to meet other players and provides exposure of the sport in the facility. The inclusion of refereeing adds much to the enjoyment of the players on court, as well as the spectators.

The format will be as follows. …

A “Session” runs October to December and the next “Session” runs January to April. This allows teams to be realigned and allows players to join or leave the league with a shorter commitment. It is hoped that players enjoy this flexibility.

4 players per team, one in each of 4 divisions

5 teams in the league (The number of teams can be increased or number of players per team if needs dictate)

Each week, Wednesday evening, 4 teams play and one team will be responsible for refereeing matches. A schedule will be developed so each player knows who is responsible for reffing and playing. The session runs 10 weeks and each team plays each other twice.

Refereeing is required but assistance will be provided for those who would like it. Being reffed and able to referee adds much to your game. Don’t let this scare you.

This format is similar to many leagues run in other centres, ie Toronto, Calgary, Vancouver, ….

The league winds up with the teams with the most points winning the session. Prizes and a social will follow each session.

More info will follow as the date gets closer. Watch for updates here, and on posters at the Complex. You may also email info@thunderbaysquash.info for any immediate questions, suggestions, concerns or interest.

A refereeing clinic (or two) will be scheduled for September. This will be a great opportunity to have your rules questions answered.

See you in Court on Wednesday!

A better league name and a mascot will be selected in the first session. Any suggestions?

Court Jesters Squash League

The Canada Games Complex is home to the Court Jesters Squash League. This is a team structured league catering to all levels of player. There are 6 teams composed of 6 players each, 2 players in each of 3 divisions, Novice, Intermediate and Advanced. The season is divided into 2 week blocks and each team is scheduled to play one other team in each block. A win gets 2 points for your team and a loss gets one point. This format means that as long as players are getting their games in, they are doing their part for their respective team.  This format allows players with varying schedules to get their games played as there is no one dedicated night to play. Players have two weeks to get two games in. How you do that is up to you and your partner.

Black Knight Squash League

This league is basically the same as the Court Jesters. There are slight variations such as time lines for getting your games in. This is the longest running league in the city and calls the Fitness Centre its home.
